Upcoming September Events
September ushers in more than just the first day of fall. In addition to regularly scheduled tours and programs, Presque Isle Historical Society has new things headed your way!
Join us on Saturday, September 1 for the opening of a new exhibit - TALKING WIRES: The Social Impact of the Telephone Switchboard on rural Northern Maine. The exhibit features a restored fully operational switchboard from the Presque Isle office, photos, antique telephones, and transcripts of oral history interviews with retired local switchboard operators. The exhibit opening will be celebrated with special guests, antique cars on display and a hot dog cook-out (by donation). The exhibit will be on display at the Maysville Museum, 165 Caribou Road through the end of this season. The exhibit and museum open at 10:00 a.m. with a short talk at 10:15 a.m. Free admission.
Of course, don't forget about the Amazing Mystery History Tour aboard Molly the Trolley on Monday, September 3!
Presque Isle Historical Society has a rich Civil War collection - and it is about to become even more dynamic with the recent donation of not one, but TWO new artifacts. To celebrate these "new" items in our collection, we will be offering a "Presque Isle Civil War Trails Tour" aboard Molly the Trolley on Saturday, September 29 at 1:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 and seats are limited, so reservations are strongly suggested. The tour will depart from the Historic Fire Station at 1:00 p.m. visiting some of the local cemeteries with Civil War graves and culminating with a guided stroll through our Civil War exhibit. One of the "new" artifacts is the Civil War diary of Presque Isle's Harrison Robinson. The second "new" artifact is SO AMAZING that we want to surprise you on the day of the tour. This tour will then be offered annually on Memorial Day (which was originally known as "Decoration Day" and created shortly after the Civil War)!
