In 1890, Merchants Trust and Banking Company was established with prominent local attorney Charles Allen as one of the organizers. He also served as President in its early years. This bank was located next door in what is now the MFX Building at 422 Main Street. The vault for this bank still exists in that building.
First National Bank of Presque Isle and Merchants Trust merged in December of 1931 to form the Presque Isle National Bank, which was housed in the MFX Building. Carl Weick served as its first President. The bank closed in March of 1932 when the U.S. President declared a bank holiday.
When the bank re-opened in September, it was known as Northern National Bank. In 1933, Northern National purchased the Perry Building on the southeast corner of State and Main (where Bemis & Rossignol law offices are located today). The building burned down in 1943.
The bank re-opened in September of 1946 on the northeast corner of State and Main (present day location of Key Bank). In 1956, Northern National purchased the property on the northeast corner of Cedar and Main Streets from Phil Phair in order to build a drive-in banking facility. That drive-through no longer exists today.
In 1977, Northern National Bank built a 4-story addition adjacent to the building on Main and State. The building immediately to the north of the new addition, which housed the Roma Café, was later torn down in order to have a parking lot for the bank.
Northern National Bank became Casco Northern Bank in 1983. In 1984, Casco Northern Bank became the Bank of Boston. Then in 1993, the Bank of Boston branch here was sold to Key Bank when Bank of Boston decided to focus on larger markets in New England.
