This is the site of the original city hall, then a two-story wooden structure which was subsequently moved to Main Street and sat on the site of today’s Braden Theatre. Academy Training School, also known simply as Training School, was built around 1860.
The original structure was 40 x 60 feet. This building was destroyed by a fire on March 4, 1927 which started in an overheated oil stove in the attic. The fire alarm sounded at 9:00 a.m. and the building was totally lost by 4:00 p.m. A new building was built over the summer by N.W. Downing and Sons in time for classes to resume in the fall. The school operated until its closing in 1978.
