MISSION STATEMENT

Founded in 1963, the Presque Isle Historical Society seeks to study, preserve, and promote the history, local culture, heritage, and physical artifacts of Presque Isle , Maine for future generations.

The Presque Isle Historical Society strives to accomplish this mission through a variety of public programs and activities, including but not limited to exhibits, publications, lectures, tours, maintenance and operation of the Vera Estey House and the old fire station for housing and displaying historic materials, fundraising events, and various educational programs.

VISION STATEMENT

The vision of the Presque Isle Historical Society is: to provide, with the completion of the restoration of our historic fire station, a local cultural center promoting Aroostook County, providing educational and volunteer opportunities for the entire community by which it can connect with its historical past; to be recognized as a leader in the historical and cultural heritage of our area; and thus to play an active role in the revitalization of our historic downtown.

The completed restoration will offer a central location for cultural tourism, historical learning, and educational opportunities promoting all of Aroostook County . This site will house an enormous collection of historic county photos, and old books and documents that currently have no permanent location. With the completion of the Restoration Project, the Historical Society will be able to expand learning opportunities by finally being able to offer a place to participate in hands-on learning and presentations. The facility will also offer rotating displays for art exhibits, historic displays, and cultural presentations. In addition to saving our historic fire station, we will provide a place to display our many treasured historical artifacts that presently have no permanent home. These artifacts range in size from small farming implements to larger items. Some of these larger items include: a unique 1929 fire truck that can be fitted with skis to function in heavy winter snow conditions, a 1917 Model T, and a 1900 horse-drawn limousine carriage. Phase two of the restoration will include renovations to the second floor where we will have an educational center for use by local schools, civic groups, and local secondary educational organizations. The space will further allow for a guest lecturer series and a permanent office for the historical society. It is our hope that this project will also play a key role in the downtown revitalization movement currently underway.
